Calling the time of learning and preparation through our Confirmation Ministry, Affirmation of Baptism, in the end, is a much more descriptive name. Essentially it is an opportunity for young people to affirm, for themselves, the promises that their parents, sponsors, and congregation made for them at their baptism. These promises take into account such things as: Nurturing them in the faith, placing in their hands the holy Scriptures, the Bible, and sharing with them the Word of God...bringing them to God's Holy House to worship him...participating in the educational opportunities of the church, such as Sunday School and the Confirmation program...bringing them to the Lords' Table...teaching them the Lord's Prayer, the Apostle's Creed and the Ten Commandments...and so much more.
The process of confirmation varies from congregation to congregation. But an essential value of being Lutheran is to rest in the Word of God; learn God's Word and his teachings and know it as food for the soul. "God's Word is live and active" - Hebrews 4:12. Therefore it is a program of spiritual formation in which each young person will make their decision to live for God or not.
And so we remain faithful to instructing, nurturing, encouraging young people to take on greater responsibility in their spiritual journey and continue to live out their wonder and awe of the God who considers them each His masterpiece; trusting in their God who has plans for them which are for good and not for evil, to give them a future and a hope. Jer.29:11.
